Let’s review what we are doing. Crime Stoppers primary mission is to provide an anonymous tips hotline for concerned citizens to report criminal activity to law enforcement. The citizens on your Board of Directors grant rewards to informants for leads that solve crimes. The rewards are funded by fees assessed on court cases. Our citizen Board ensures appropriate review and use of public funds. A separate budget is maintained for tips, is restricted primarily to program costs, marketing and award payments.
Over the past decade, two significant decisions significantly impacted Multi-County Crime Stoppers and its mission.
- At the invitation of our state coordinating board, oversight of Liberty and San Jacinto counties was added to the original Montgomery County Crime Stoppers and Multi-County Crime Stoppers was formed. This provided oversight for the tips hotline to support sheriffs in these counties. Organizational reach and coordination among all three counties improved with minimal additional burdens. A true win, win, win!
- The Multi-County Crime Stoppers board has raised money, separate from state-restricted funds, and committed to use these funds to support crime prevention projects. Over $400,000 has been contributed to local law enforcement, community action and other entities to fight crime before it happens. Together we have bought equipment such as police body cameras and training materials, DARE training, gas masks, drug kits, funded canine purchases and handler training, and improved communication networks between our communities, and improved school safety. Let’s go!
This is only possible thanks to our supporters; these donations are making a huge difference especially with the population growth in our counties. Focus has been placed on crimes against children and women. Currently, the board is committed on keeping schools safe against active shooters by equipping classrooms with Bearacades, a simple and cost effective way to secure doors. We are backing the Bearacade program to minimize the prospective impacts of an active shooter event should it ever happen to our kids. All because of you. |

current happenings
Here is a summary of a few items from the November meeting:
- The Board approved payments on six tips.
- Results from the annual golf tournament were reviewed with over $40,000 raised.
- Constable Ryan Gable along with three officers on his staff presented an $18,103 opportunity to fund equipment necessary for a 9 man task force to specifically apprehend those charged with child sex offenses. These actions have been increasingly burdensome on existing law officers while activating the Sheriff’s SWAT patrol is expensive and not necessarily in line with that mission. .The reason the Constable approached the Board is that the 2019 budget has been exhausted and the preliminary work of this task force, developed on an ad hoc basis with available funds, is encouraging. Rather than wait for the next budget cycle, which may or may not be able to provide necessary funds, your board elected to fund the necessary equipment to keep this task force moving forward. Who doesn’t wish to do all we can to get these predators out of our communities?
This is not the first time MCCS has successfully partnered with Constable Gable. We have funded overtime in the Rayford/Sawdust corridor to fight a violent crime surge and purchase a specialized, one of the first five in the nation, dog to specifically target child sex offenders. This dog, Brodie, is trained to sniff for glue in electronic devices used by many predators to store disgusting images, as officers arrest violators. The evidence is necessary to gain convictions. |
